Deployable Shade Structure - R&D Patent
I was invited to join an R&D brainstorm to think about ways to alleviate the heat in areas without overhead cover around Disney parks. One of the driving criteria was making sure that by providing a shade structure we weren't blocking the view to attractions, buildings and other activations. Looking at nature for inspiration we proposed a deployable shade structure that would expand on queue reacting to environmental sensors. It was a great solution because it also leverages the existing park infrastructure of light posts, structural foundations and power supply to reduce schedule and initial cost.
The breathable fabric canopy can also host IP graphics and become a projection surface to supplement night time shows. The expanding and retractable mechanism was developed with an outside consultant.
